So many people pray for a day
a chance to start again
The warmth of sunlight on their face
a lengthened line of sight
Believing what they think they see
subscribing to illusion
It’s easier when the shadows draw
the lines twixt good and evil.
All we wanted was to say
good-bye to the longest day.
We have waited for so long
huddled in the wood
Camouflaged by others fears
dogma is to blame
And as we hold each other close
blotted out before we stain
Lonely heroes in the mist
deafened by voices of disdain.
All we wanted was to say
good-bye to the longest day.
Arm’s length across a field
watching children play
Parents walking hand in hand
shower love upon their kin
We were strays looked down upon
never invited out to play
No one ever chances time
with the broken or dismayed.
All we wanted was to say
good-bye to the longest day.
In the spotted nighttime sky
we now can fly away
Spread out wings like peaceful doves
soaring ever free
Guided by the stars clean light
looking down upon the past
Where untouched fields blend into forests
boundaries blurred by twilight
The sun has set to finally say
good-bye to the longest day
