One day, when I inevitably die, I hope that instead of cry,
You take it all,
Every little thing I left behind, And you reinvent it all.
A perfectly preserved legacy, It is only a burden,
Instead, I leave you with a gift, Everything I ever did,
It is now yours, So go on, explore.
Hell, burn it all to ashes,
Then celebrate as it all crashes, Whatever remains, use it as a foundation, Build upon it your own creation.
But please spare yourself the chore,
Don’t take what I make and put it behind glass, Don’t file everything in neat little stacks.
Don’t hold onto the past, my past.
Let me go, set me free, Only then you will see, That’s the gift I bequeath, It’s your time to be alive, So go on and thrive.
Everything I ever did,
It is all yours to give,
So give it away,
Make room for others to stay.
My legacy is not in a name,
It’s not in an ashtray,
No work of art nor carefully preserved tradition Will extend my existence.
Who I was lives on in you
and everything you will do,
So go on, be alive!
With every breath, may you thrive.
